NORFOLK, VA -- Senior attack Danielle Hensil (Havertown, PA) put away the game-winner for Old Dominion with less than 30 seconds remaining in the game to give the Lady Monarchs a 13-12 victory over #10 James Madison. The Lady Monarchs improve to 5-1 on the year and are off to their best start since their inaugural season in 1980 when they began the year 6-1.

The Lady Monarchs downed their second ranked opponent this week. On Wednesday, Old Dominion recorded a 12-10 win over #20 Richmond.

Hensil, sophomore Melody Shotwell (Fairfax Station, VA), junior Erin Lindsey (Audubon, PA), and senior co-captain Marlaine Smith (Gaithersburg, MD) each reached the back of the James Madison net three times. Junior Janine Rodriguez (Davidsonville, MD) recorded two assists in the Lady Monarch win.

For James Madison, Gail Decker tallied four goals and an assist. Lisa Staedt, Jessica Brownrdige, and Carrie Martell each had two goals.

The two squads entered the half tied at 7-7 with each team taking in sharing control of the lead. Brownridge and Staedt starting the scoring early as James Madison took a 2-0 lead within the first five minutes of action. JMU extended its lead to 3-1, before the Lady Monarchs went to score four unanswered goals to take a 4-3 lead. Junior Suzanne Wosczyna (Phoenixville, PA), returning to the field for the first time in two games, reached the back of the Duke net to tie the score at 3-3 with 16:52 remaining in the half.

Old Dominion took a 6-4 lead with 7:54 remaining thanks to Shotwell's first goal of the afternoon, but the Duke came storming back to tie the game at 6-6 a minute and a half later on goals by Decker and Johanna Buchholz. Smith returned the lead back to ODU, but Brownridge scored again with just over a minute remaining to tie up the game entering the intermission.

A see-saw battle ensued during the first 10 minutes of the second half of play. Shotwell tied the game up 10-10 followed another tally by Shotwell and Lindsey's third goal of the day to give Old Dominion a 12-10 edge with 7:54 remaining. Decker pulled the Dukes within one, 12-11 with less than six minutes remaining. The Lady Monarchs had control off the ball downfield at the James Madison net, but a turnover gave the ball back to the Dukes as Beth Davis tied the game at 12-12 with less than minute to go.

With time winding down, Hensil was fouled giving the Lady Monarchs one last attempt on net with approxiatemly 19 seconds remaining. Hensil faked left evading her James Madison defender and quickly turned to her right side to launch her shot into the Duke net for the game winner.

Rookie goalkeeper Michelle Gannon (Delmar, MD) made four saves in net for the Lady Monarchs, while James Madison's Amy Altig and Livvy King combined for 11 stops in the Duke net.

Defensively, Smith collected four groundballs for the Lady Monarchs. Shotwell and junior Molly Coane (Bayshore, NY) each scooped up three. Hensil and senior co-captain Kim Calkin (Winter Springs, FL) each caused two turnovers. Steadt, Brownridge, Erin Chantler, and Beth Davis each recorded three groundballs for the Dukes and Ashlee Dardine registered six caused turnovers.

The Lady Monarchs continue their four game homestand next week. Old Dominion will host #3 Maryland on Saturday, March 22nd at Foreman Field at noon.
