NORFOLK, VA -- The top seeds at the Colonial Athletic Association (CAA) Field Hockey Championships advanced to the tournament final as the Lady Monarchs of Old Dominion University and the William and Mary Tribe face each other tomorrow at 1:00 p.m. Top seeded Old Dominion handed fourth seeded James Madison a 14-1 loss, while the second seeded Tribe used a second half surge for a 4-1 victory over the third seeded Delaware Fightin' Blue Hens.
In the first semifinal, featuring top ranked Old Dominion (18-3) and 10th ranked James Madison (14-7), the Lady Monarchs wasted no time getting onto the scoreboard. CAA Player of the Year, senior midfielder Tiffany Snow (Escondido, CA), gave Old Dominion a 1-0 lead four minutes into the contest as the Lady Monarchs went on to score 13 unanswered goals. Snow finished the afternoon with two goals and an assist, while classmate Tara Herrmann (Perkasie, PA) led the squad with three. Forwards junior Angie Loy (Loysville, PA), and rookie Rosalinda Banuelos (Escondido, CA) also added two goals apiece as nine different Lady Monarch reached the back of the Duke net in the victory.
Old Dominion enjoyed a 5-0 halftime lead and extended it 13-0 before James Madison junior forward Merideth Lowrance (Va. Beach, VA) came off the bench to thwart the shutout with an unassisted goal with just under ten minutes remaining.
The 14 goals netted by the Old Dominion squad ties the CAA Tournament record for most goals in a game. The Lady Monarchs set the record back in 1996 with a 14-1 win over Radford in the semifinals.
The Lady Monarchs outshot the Dukes, 29-7, and held the advantage in penalty corners, 12-4. Old Dominion netminders, senior Marybeth Freeman (Holland, PA) and junior Tina Walker (Suffolk, VA), recorded three saves in net. Senior Kiernan Raffo (Va. Beach, VA) and CAA Rookie of the Year Lori Amico (New Holland, PA) combined for 11 saves in the Duke net.
William and Mary (12-7), ranked 20th in the most recent NFHCA Poll, extended its winning streak to nine games with a victory over Delaware (10-10), who made their inaugural CAA Tournament appearance, in the second semifinal.
The Tribe took a 1-0 lead after the first half of play. Senior forward Ann Ekberg (Va. Beach, VA) scored the lone goal of the first stanza with a turn around shot at the right side of the net 10 minutes into the game.
Delaware tied the score at 1-1 with 27:39 remaining in the game. Sophomore forward Lauren Carr (West Chester, PA) collected a rebound off the Tribe keeper on a penalty corner shot and fed it to senior midfielder Kelly Coyle (Lawrenceville, NJ) for the goal.
William and Mary took control of the game late in the second half as Ekberg tallied her second goal of the afternoon for the game-winner with 10 minutes remaining on the clock. Junior forward Jordan Steele (Williamsburg, VA) and sophomore midfielder Kate Baird (Lismore, Australia) each added insurance goals in the closing minutes of play.
Both teams collected nine shots on net, while the Fightin' Blue Hens out cornered William and Mary, 7-6. The Tribe's senior Claire Miller (Va. Beach, VA) registered six saves, all in the first half, while Delaware goalkeeper senior Stephanie Judefind (Wilmington, DE) stopped three shots on goal.
Tomorrow's finale will take place at 1:00 p.m. at Foreman Field on the campus of Old Dominion. The Lady Monarchs will be appearing in their 12th CAA championship game having won 10 titles, including the last six straight. William and Mary returns to the title game for the first time since 1991, the first year of the CAA Field Hockey Tournament.
