Lady Monarchs Fall to William & Mary in Regular Season Finale

NORFOLK, Va. -- The 17th ranked ODU Lady Monarchs locked up the number three seed for the 2009 CAA Tournament when they fell to William & Mary in the regular season finale tonight, 20-10. ODU will face the second-seeded University of Delaware in semifinal action on the campus of William & Mary next Thursday, April 30 at 7:30 pm. The other semifinal game will feature top seeded William & Mary versus Towson University at 5:00 pm.

The Tribe won their second consecutive CAA regular season title with the win, as they handed the Lady Monarchs its first loss at home this season. The loss snapped a five game winning streak for ODU as well.

William & Mary scored a trio of quick goals to jump ahead in the game, a lead they would never relinquish. ODU pulled within one with goals from senior Jessica Noone and Ashley Kellogg, but the Tribe would score seven of the next eight over the next ten minutes to lead 10-3.

Kellogg scored two more goals in the first half, but William & Mary would add three more as well and went into the break ahead 13-5.

In the second half, William & Mary forced a running clock with another early run, scoring six of the first seven goals in the frame. Maggie Anderson led the way, scoring her fourth and fifth goals of the game to increase the Tribe lead to as many as 13.

With the score 19-6 with just over three minutes remaining, ODU senior Kelly Kimener scored her 42nd goal of the season in her final regular season game at home. Sophomore Clara Flanagan added her first and second career goals just a minute later, within 12 seconds of eachother to pull the Lady Monarchs back within 10 goals.

Kristin Anderson scored her first goal of the season for the Tribe, answered by Lisa Bernardini's 23rd of the season for the final, 20-10.

Junior Saratu Dodo also scored two goals in the game for ODU. William & Mary was led by Maggie Anderson with five goals with Grace Golden and Molly Wannen scoring three goals and adding an assist each.

Earlier in the day, the University of Delaware fell to Towson in their regular season finale, making the ODU-William & Mary nightcap the game deciding first place in the league. With the win, the Tribe will host the 2009 CAA Tournament next week with the semifinals on Thursday, April 30 and the Championship game on Saturday, May 2.
