Banks, Foglesong and Kulp Pace Monarchs Win Over UNCW, 3-0
Oct. 26, 2007
WILMINGTON, N.C. - Junior Bobby Foglesong scored once and added an assist as Old Dominion moved into a second-place tie in the Colonial Athletic Association with a 3-0 win over UNC Wilmington on Friday at the UNCW Soccer Stadium. The Monarchs improved to 9-5-1 overall, 6-1 in the CAA, and joined second-place Towson, who was rained out against James Madison on Friday, in the conference standings with 18 points. The Seahawks fell to 2-11-1 with the home loss and 1-6 in the league.
Fogleson gave ODU the lead just before intermission with his first goal of the season. The midfielder received a pass in the middle of the field, outside the penalty area, beat his defender and fired a hard low shot inside the left post at the 42:08 mark. The Monarchs were able to hold off several attempts by the Seahawks to draw even before putting the game away with a pair of goals in the final six minutes.
UNCW's best chance to tie the game came in the 71st minute when freshman Ethan Morrow's shot from the top of the penalty area was turned aside by sophomore goalkeeper Evan Newton. Newton would finish with four saves on the match in recording his league-leading seventh shutout of the season.
Junior Trevor Banks' fifth goal of the season helped ODU extend its lead to 2-0 in the 85th minute. Senior A.J. Kulp served a corner kick into the penalty area where Banks was able to head the ball underneath the crossbar for the goal.
Freshman Stig Haddal closed out the scoring in the 87th minute off a chip pass from Foglesong that put him into a 1-on-1 situation with the UNCW goalkeeper. Haddal slipped his shot past the charging goalkeeper for his second goal of the season. Kulp leads the Monarchs with five assists this year.
The Monarchs outshot UNCW, 15-4, with all four Seahawk shots being on goal. ODU returns home Sunday for the regular season home finale against Georgia State. Game time is 1 p.m. It will be senior day for David Horst, A.J. Kulp, Yomby William and Justin Vaughter
