Women's Rowing Takes Three Races Against North Carolina
April 25, 2009
RALEIGH, N.C. -- The Old Dominion women's rowing team claimed victory in three of the five races against North Carolina Saturday at Lake Wheeler in Raleigh, North Carolina. The Lady Monarchs show their developing speed as they won the day's first three races with the Novice 4, Freshman/Novice 8, and Varsity 4 shells capturing wins.
In the first race of the day, ODU's Novice 4 had a rough start, but quickly recovered to race evenly with UNC through the thousand. With 400 to go ODU had taken the lead and held it to win by almost a length, crossing in first three seconds faster than the UNC "A" squad. The Lady Monarchs posted a time of 8:05.04, ahead of the Tar Heel's 8:08.5 finish.
The Freshman/Novice 8 out rowed the Tar Heels by nearly 10 seconds as ODU claimed victory with a time of 6:57.6. Second place North Carolina finished in a time of 7:07.2. Carolina rowed within a length of ODU until the Lady Monarchs made their move and opened up their 10 second lead crossing the line.
The Lady Monarch's Varsity 4 rounded out the ODU's wins at Lake Wheeler. Rowing well throughout and pushing their lead to the largest margin of the morning events, ODU found themselves at the finish line over 12 seconds ahead of the Tar Heels in a time of 7:40.73. North Carolina crossed with a time of 7:52.97.
The Tar Heels won the final two races of regatta. Hitting the water for a second time, the Lady Monarchs' Novice 8 squad had a strong row, however a fresh North Carolina boat won with a time of 7:23.14, ahead of ODU's second place time of 7:35.00.
The Tar Heels also narrowly edged out the Lady Monarchs in the Varsity 8. Again, it was a second row for an ODU team, as they competed against a pair of North Carolina Varisty 8's that had not raced yet. Old Dominion's freshman dominated boat finished two seconds right behind UNC's "A" boat, that featured seven seniors. The Lady Monarchs clocked in at 6:52.42, as North Carolina picked up the win in a time of 6:50.45. ODU and UNC "A" raced side by side down the course with the Lady Monarch stroking at 33 and the Tar Heels at a 36. ODU took a deck length lead with about 75 meters to go, but UNC took the rate up in the last seven strokes to edge out ODU in the most tightly contested race of the day.
"Today was an important stepping stone for us," said head coach Heather Weisel. "To have all three focus boats win and then the V8 filled with five freshman racing their second event of the morning race the way they did today against all those seniors, that was tremendous. The team has learned so much in such a short time, but we know there's more to do because teams will keep getting faster heading into Vails. It's very exciting but we're just focusing on one day at a time."
The Lady Monarchs will close out their inaugural year of women's rowing at the Dad Vail Regatta on May 8th and 9th in Philadelphia, Pa.
