Field Hockey Ranked Eighth In Latest STX/NFHCA Poll

NORFOLK, Va. -- The Old Dominion field hockey team slipped back one spot in the latest STX/NFHCA Division I Coaches' Poll despite wins over then-20th ranked Hofstra and Drexel last weekend. The Lady Monarchs rank eighth with a 7-3 overall record.

North Carolina (14-0) continues to take the top spot, followed by Wake Forest (11-2). Michigan State (11-1) moved up one place to third, as did Duke (9-2), who moved into fourth.

Three CAA schools are represented in this week's poll. Along with Old Dominion, Delaware (8-4), one of the Lady Monarchs' opponents this weekend, moved up a notch to 14th, while William & Mary makes it first appearance in the Top 20. Hofstra fell out of the Top 20, but still makes an appearance in the poll. The Pride are receiving votes along with Virginia Commonwealth.

The Lady Monarchs, who are coming off four consecutive home victories, return to action this weekend. Old Dominion travels to Towson on Friday, October 8th and Delaware on Sunday, October 10th.

The next poll will be released on Tuesday, October 12, 2004. The STX/NFHCA Division I National Coaches Poll has no bearing on selection to the 2004 NCAA Division I Championship field.
