Wrestling Monarchs Finish Third at CAA Championships
FAIRFAX, VA (March 4) -- Old Dominion's wrestling team finished in third place in the Colonial Athletic Association Championships today at George Mason University. Old Dominion freshman Dennis Whitby (Lanoka Harbor, NJ) won the 149-pound title, while sophomore Jeff Rusak (Reading, PA) finished second at 165, to advance to the NCAA Championships in St. Louis, MO.
The Monarchs sent four wrestlers into the finals, with Whitby earning the title with a sudden-death victory over GMU's Adrian Austin, 6-4. At 157, freshman Jake Cairns (Brick, NJ) lost in sudden-death to Campbell's Billy Greene, 1-3.
At 165, 14th-ranked Rusak was upset by American's Denis Alampiev, ranked #20 in the nation, 6-9. However, Rusak will advance to the NCAA Championships for the second straight year as one of the CAA's three "wild cards".
At 174, sophomore George Sable (Middle Island, NY) finished runner-up for the second straight year, falling to JMU's Nathan Rickman, 3-6.
James Madison won the title for the second straight year, followed by George Mason, ODU, Campbell and American. Alampiev was named as the Most Outstanding Wrestler.
