LAWRENCEVILLE, N.J. -- The 19th ranked Old Dominion Monarch wrestling team won a 28-15 conference match against Rider, wrapping up a perfect campaign in the Colonial Athletic Association this season. Old Dominion went 5-0 to seal the regular season conference title and has just two matches remaining before the CAA Tournament. ODU's top ten tandem, James Nicholson and Ryan Williams, each posted their 30th wins of the season. Rider falls to 6-7/3-2 while Old Dominion improves to 15-6 overall and 5-0 in the CAA.

"We're very pleased to win our first regular season CAA title with today's win," said head coach Steve Martin. "It's great for the program because it's another first. We're real proud of the kids. They all wrestled hard and put a bunch of points on the board, which is something we've been emphasizing. Now we turn to Virginia Tech, who we are very excited to host. They are a top twenty team and we're hoping to pack the place."

The Monarchs jumped to a big lead early, winning the first four matches powered by a pair of pins by Nicholson and Williams. Nicholson, ranked number six at 125 lbs, pinned Tim Trivisonno just 1:23 into the match and after a Kyle Hutter decision at 133 lbs, Williams mirrored Nicholson with a pin over Fred Rodgers at 141 lbs. The team score would favor ODU 19-0 after Joey Metzler scored an 11-3 major decision at 149 lbs over Aaron Nestor.

Nicholson improves to 30-2 and Williams to 30-3 for the season. It was Williams' 128th career victory, inching closer to the illustrious 135 set by Jeff Rusak at the top of the ODU career list.

Rider would counter with wins at three of the next four weights, including a pin at 165 lbs by Jason Lapham to cut the lead to 19-9. ODU's Eric Decker earned a forfeit victory at 174 lbs, making the leady 25-9 headed into the final three matches. At 184 lbs, fifth ranked Doug Umbehauer dropped ODU rookie by decision, 7-2.

Junior Jesse Strawn would seal the victory for the Monarchs at 197 lbs, with a 2-0 decision over Mike Miller. Eddie Bordas dropped ODU's Roy Dragon III by decision in the final match at heavyweight.

Old Dominion posted it's second straight season with 15 wins and it's first undefeated CAA season since joining the league. The team will host #14 Virginia Tech on Thursday, February 19 at 7:30 pm in the final home match of the year, and then will travel to NC State for a match on Saturday, February 21 at 7:30 pm.
