NORFOLK, Va. -- Led by sophomore Kyle Hutter (Mokena, Ill.), the Monarchs improved to 13-3 on the season with a 30-6 victory over the Bucknell Bison (7-8-1). Hutter notched his third win over a nationally ranked opponent in two weeks when he pinned #15 David Marble in the third period of the 133-lb bout. The win was one of eight on the day for ODU as they dropped the Bison for the first time in school history.

ODU started the match with four straight victories from the lightweight divisions. 125-pounder James Nicholson (Des Moines, Iowa) earned a reversal with just over 30 seconds remaining in his match to give ODU a bonus point victory, the first of four on the day. Hutter followed Nicholson in the 133-lb bout against Marble.

The Bison grappler came in ranked 15th in the country by USA Today/InterMat/NWCA. He was 19-4 on the season with 10 wins in his last 11 bouts. Hutter, however, came in one of the hottest Monarch grapplers, winning 12 of his last 14, including wins over two nationally ranked foes at the Virginia Duals. Against Marble, Hutter dominated, giving up just two points to the 15th ranked wrestler before pinning him in the third period with 1:22 remaining.

The next two wrestlers for ODU, Ryan Williams and Kaylen Baxter, added to their already nationwide lead in total wins on the season. Baxter leads the nation with 34 and Williams is immediately behind with 32. Williams grabbed his tenth major decision on the year and Baxter dropped Kevin LeValley in a 5-3 decision.

Bucknell followed with the first of two victories, as Brantley Hooks got the better of ODU's Dan Rivera, 7-3. The marquee matchup followed, as #19 Andy Rendos of Bucknell faced #20 Chris Brown from ODU. Had the first period just a few more seconds, Brown would have nailed a takedown in the first as time expired, but as it were, the two were tied at zero headed into the second.

Brown chose down in the second and earned a quick reversal with a nifty move just 20 seconds into the period. Rendos would counter with a reversal about 30 seconds later to tie the match at 2. Brown escaped before the period ended giving him a 3-2 edge into the third. However, Rendos took down in the third and was able to escape to tie the score at three to force a sudden victory period.

In the sudden victory period, both battled, each making a move on offense, but it was Brown who scored a takedown with just six seconds remaining in the sudden victory period for the win.

Shane Riccio defeated ODU senior Nick Pullano, 4-2, at 174 lbs to cut the lead to 20-6, but that would be as close as Bucknell would get as the Monarchs swept the upperweights. Jesse Strawn won 7-0 at 184 lbs, David Mendoza grabbed his sixth major decision on the year with a 13-3 major over Jay Hahn and Andy Totusek won in a tiebreaker over George Hingson.

The 30-6 victory is the first ever for ODU over Bucknell and helps the Monarchs maintain its current home winning streak, improving to seven straight in Norfolk. Old Dominion returns to the mat next week as they travel to Fairfax, Virginia and Washington, D.C. for duals against George Mason and American University on February 3.
