Four Monarchs Take First Place at Virginia Intercollegiate State Tournament

CHARLOTTESVILLE, VA -Four Monarchs took first place in their respective weight classes Saturday at the Virginia Intercollegiate State Tournament, held at the University of Virginia, and finished 2nd overall in the team standings with 97.5 points. ODU placed a total of seven wrestlers, with three Monarchs taking third place. The 2nd place finish and the seven placewinners was the highest finish and most placewinners at the Virginia States for ODU since the 1994 season. Christian Staylor (Chesapeake, VA/Great Bridge/125), B.J. Compton (Christiansburg, VA/133), Rob Gosnell (Warrenton, VA/165) and Adam Wright (Dayton, VA/184) took first places, while Hunter Davenport (Chesapeake, VA/Great Bridge/149), John Adams (Chesapeake, VA/Deep Creek/174) and Andrew Jordan (Newark, DE/197) all took third place. Christian Staylor was named Outstanding Wrestler for the tournament.
Christian Staylor, the #1 seed in the 125 weight class, defeated Virginia's Adam Kimbrell by fall (3:00), defeated VMI's Jeremy Adams of VMI by fall at the 59 second mark and defeated #2 seed Anthony Burke of Virginia by a 11-2 major decision to take 1st place.
B.J. Compton, the #2 seed at 133, defeated JMU's Zach Peterson by fall at the 3:23 mark, defeated #3 seed Byron Dunlap of Virginia by a 9-0 major decision and defeated #1 seed David Emison of GMU by a 11-10 decision to take 1st place.
Shanon Slack (Richmond, VA), the #2 seed at 141, defeated VMI's Jay Carter by a 7-3 decision and defeated Virginia's Chet Naylor by a 5-1 decision before falling to Virginia's Aaron Martin, the #3 seed, by a 3-1 decision. Slack lost a 11-4 decision to GMU's Jay Chichester in the consolation bout.
At 149, Hunter Davenport, the #3 seed, defeated GMU's Robert Henry by a 7-3 decision before dropping a 7-4 decision to #2 seed Paul Dunstan of Virginia. In consolations, Davenport defeated teammate Josh Tyler (Mechanicsville, VA) by a 3-2 decision before defeating GMU's Robert Henry for the second time, this time by a fall at the 2:15 mark to take third place. Josh Tyler lost to #1 seed Sam Alvarenga of VMI by a 14-1 major decision before dropping his bout to Davenport.
Nick Pullano (Chesapeake, VA/Great Bridge), the #3 seed at 157, lost to VMI's Tommy Cunningham by a 5-2 decision before dropping a 6-2 decision to Virginia's Jim Hartey in consolations.
Robby Gosnell, the #1 seed at 165, defeated GMU's Randy Oates by a 10-2 major decision, defeated the Apprentice School's Jovon Butler by a 7-2 decision, defeated Conor Manley of Virginia by a 12-3 major decision and defeated #2 seed John Lowery of VMI by a 2-0 decision to take first place. James Conyers (Chesapeake, VA/Western Branch) lost his first round match to VMI's Dustin McCabe by a 4-3 decision before winning a 3-2 decision to Virginia's Brian McReynolds in the first round of consolations, and defeating John Divello of JMU by a fall at the 1:44 mark in the second round. Conyers dropped a 11-4 decision to the Apprentice School's Jovon Butler in the third round.
At 174, John Adams, the #3 seed, lost his first bout to #2 seed Brian Lambert of JMU by a 12-8 decision before defeating JMU's Bucky Anderson by a 12-1 major decision and #2 seed Nick Webster of George Mason by a 11-2 major decision to take third place.
Adam Wright, the #1 seed at 184, defeated Virginia's Chudi Uraik by a 15-3 major decision, George Mason's Mike Eastman by medical forfeit and Virginia's Kyle Narkiewicz by a 11-5 decision to take first place. Shea Smith (Virginia Beach, VA/Tallwood) lost his first round match to GMU's Jim Martin by a 5-3 decision before defeated the Appentice School's William Scott by a fall at the 2:26 mark in the first round of consolations. Smith was defeated by GMU's Matt Horton by a 14-3 major decision in the second round.
Andrew Jordan lost his first match at 197 to #2 seed Scott Smith of Virginia before defeating the Apprentice School's Larry France by a fall at the 5:49 mark and JMU's Zack Winfrey by a 7-4 decision to take third place.
The Monarchs will be back in action next Friday and Saturday, when they compete in the Virginia Duals in Hampton, VA.
