NORFOLK, VA -- Senior Tiffany Snow (Escondido, CA) scored off a penalty corner and converted two strokes to lift the fourth ranked Old Dominion field hockey team to a 7-3 victory over #8 James Madison on a rainy Foreman Field this evening. The Lady Monarchs extend their CAA win-streak to 47 consecutive games and improve to 7-2 overall and 3-0 in the league play, while the Dukes drop their conference opener and third straight match falling to 5-3 on the year.
The Lady Monarchs never trailed as senior Becky Loy (Loysville, PA) netted the first goal of the game off a rebound from a penalty corner shot by Snow to put Old Dominion 1-0 six minutes into the contest. Freshman Jennifer Angat (Va. Beach, VA) tallied her first collegiate goal on a break away and Lady Monarch goal leader senior Tara Herrmann (Perkasie, PA) added her 12th goal of the year in a scramble in front of the Duke net to give Old Dominion a 3-0 advantage.
The Dukes would come within one by the half, 3-2, as they scored two unanswered goals to close the first stanza. Sophomore Veerle Goudswaard (Houten, Netherlands) netted James Madison's first goal of the night off an assist from junior Janelle Perils (Hunlock Creek, PA) along the right side of the Lady Monarch net 21 minutes into the game. The Dukes then closed the gap to one on the first of two Perlis goals with just 53 seconds remaining in the half.
In the second half, Snow netted what would be the game winner off a penalty corner set up by juniors Melissa Leonetti (Erdenheim, PA) and Angie Loy (Loysville, PA) in the 45th minutes of play. The Lady Monarchs would then go on to convert three consecutive penalty strokes to take a 7-2 lead with just under ten minutes remaining. Snow converted both her attempts, while sophomore Lotte Bant (Amsterdam, Holland) also scored on her attempt. James Madison scored one goal in the second half. Goudswaard fed Perlis on a breakaway with 21:48 remaining.
The Lady Monarchs outshot the Dukes 27-10 and also held the advantage in penalty corners 10-3. Old Dominion's Marybeth Freeman (Holland, PA) made three saves, while James Madison's Kiernan Raffo (Va. Beach, VA) stopped 13 shots on net.
The #4 Old Dominion field hockey team will return to action this weekend hosting Virginia Commonwealth on Saturday and #18 Virginia on Sunday. Both games are slated for a 1:00 p.m. start.
