CHESAPEAKE, Va. - Old Dominion is in second place after the first day of the 2009 CAA Championships at Oscar Smith High School, trailing only the Hofstra Pride. The Pride have totaled 82 team points through the semi-final round with Old Dominion at 55.5 points in second place. Rider (39.5), Drexel (25) and George Mason (24) round out the top five, each with at least two headed to the finals. The tournament will continue Saturday morning at 10:00 a.m. with the consolation semis and will be followed by the championship bouts beginning at 1:00 p.m.

ODU was led by their four top seeds, all advancing to the final round. James Nicholson, the #1 seed at 125, posted a 12-4 major decision and a 16-1 technical fall on the first day; Kyle Hutter, the #1 seed at 133, won his only match by fall in the first period (2:12); Ryan Williams, the top-ranked wrestler at 141, had a 17-6 major decision and followed it up with a 58 second pin in the semi's; and Chris Brown, the #1 at 165 lbs, had a dominant day on the mat, putting up a pair of technical falls, 22-5 and 22-6. All four are guaranteed a place at the 2009 CAA Tournament.

Four Colonial wrestlers have already punched their tickets to the NCAA Tournament, just by reaching the finals. The CAA was awarded four automatic bids at the 174 lb and 197 lb weight classes, guaranteeing a trip the Nationals for individuals from three different schools. Alton Lucas (Hofstra), the number one seed at 174 lbs, and #2 Bagna Tovuujav (George Mason) will face eachother in the finals tomorrow, but both are already headed to St. Louis. The same is the case for #1 seed Cayle Byers (George Mason) and #3 Jon Oplinger (Drexel) also will head to St. Louis after facing eachother for the 197 lb title tomorrow.

Byers and Lucas were not the only number one seeds to advance after the first day. In fact, all ten number one seeds will be wrestling for a championship tomorrow. Seven of the weights will feature a 1-2 matchup in the finals; Hofstra and Old Dominion will face off in four of them.

Hofstra led the way in bonus point victories, with 11 total including a tournament-high five pins. Top-seeded Lou Ruggirello at 133 lbs had one of those falls and also added a 15-0 shutout technical fall. Old Dominion had nine bonus point wins including a tournament-high four technical falls. Two of those four tech falls have been at the hands of #1 seed Chris Brown who posted impressive 22-5 and 22-6 point victories on the opening day.
