NORFOLK, Va. -- Junior Arni Arnason (Mosfellsbaer, Iceland) was named the Colonial Athletic Association Men's Swimmer of the Week after helping the Monarchs to a 166-129 victory over nine-time CAA champion UNC-Wilmington last weekend.
Arnason took home the top times in the 100 breast, 200 breast, and 200 IM, as well as swimming the second leg with the winning 400 medley squad. Arnason's time of 1:50.58 in the 200 IM was just .02 seconds shy of breaking the ODU record.
A member of the 2008 Icelandic Olympian Team, Arnason picked up two all-conference honors in the 100 and 200 breast last season. The two-time CAA 200 breast men's champion, he has been awarded nine All-CAA honors during his career at Old Dominion.
During the 2008-09 season, Arnason became the first Monarch to qualify for NCAA's in the Division I era and was named the CAA Swimmer and Rookie of the Year, the first swimmer in CAA history to receive Swimmer and Rookie of the Year accolades in the same season.
The ODU men's swimming and diving team is idle until the annual pod meet with William & Mary and the College of Charleston in Harrisonburg on November 5th. The ODU women's swimming and diving team returns to the pool on Saturday, October 9th hosting Radford at 1:00 p.m. at the J.C. "Scrap" Chandler Pool in the Student Recreation Center.
