Van der Merwe Falls In Quarterfinals Of UVa Invite

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. -- Senior Izak van der Merwe (Kempton Park, South Africa) ended his run for his second straight University of Virginia Men's Tennis Invitational title with a loss in the quarterfinals of the Flight A bracket. Additionally, the Monarch doubles entry of sophomore Henrique Cancado (Belo Horizonte, Brazil) and junior Adriano Mello (Londrina, Brazil) saw their run come to a halt in the Flight B doubles bracket.
Van der Merwe, the tournament's top seed and ranked ninth in the Preseason ITA Poll, fell to Wake Forest's Todd Paul in three sets. Paul, seeded eighth in the tournament, defeated van der Merwe, 6-3, 1-6, 7-5 in the quarterfinals.
Cancado and Mello fell in their quarterfinal Flight B match-up with a close 9-8 loss to Walker and Taylor of host Virginia.
In the consolation brackets, Mello remains alive in the Flight B singles backdraw. Saturday he defeated N.C. State's Josip Rupena, 6-3, 6-2.
More consolation brackets were added on Saturday. Sophomore Nate Grover (Suffolk, Va.) advanced in the second brackdraw in Flight B singles. He defeated Victor Rios of Liberty, 6-3, 6-2. Cancado used three sets to advance in the second brackdraw in Flight A singles. He defeated Stephen Rozek of Virginia, 6-4, 2-6, 10-6.
