Monarchs Close Pre-Season With 91-88 Victory over Global Sports

Rasheed Wright (Greensboro, NC) posted a double-double with a game-high 21 points and 10 boards as the Old Dominion men's basketball team defeated Global Sports 89-85 in their preseason finale Friday night at the Ted Constant Convocation Center.

Wright scored ODU's first seven points of the night as the Monarchs would fall behind by four after five minutes of play. They would battle back and take the lead for good when freshman guard Isaiah Hunter (Richmond, VA) nailed a three pointer to break a 22-22 tie with five minutes left in the half.

Altogether there were seven ties and seven lead changes in the first 15 minutes. ODU would make another run late in the half and go up by nine, 37-28, at halftime. Rahim Lockhart and and Damon Flint paced Global with seven first half points apiece.

In the second half the Monarchs came out running and would build an 20 point lead before Team Concept mounted a comeback. They slowly climbed back into the game and would hit several threes to knock the deficit to three with less than a minute remaining. John Helmsley made three of four from beyond the arc in the second period, scoring 19 of his team-best 21 in the second half. However, the Monarchs made 18 of 23 from the free throw line to seal the win.

Ricardo Marsh (Medane, NC) and Alex Loughton (Perth, Australia) would also earn double-doubles on the evening. Marsh totaled 10 points and 10 rebounds while Loughton grabbed 11 boards to go with 15 points. Sophomore Kiah Thomas (Norfolk, VA) added 17 points for the Monarchs.

Old Dominion ends exhibition action with a 1-1 record as they prepare for their regular season opener next Sunday. The Monarchs welcome the University of North Carolina to the Ted Constant Convocation Center at 1:00 p.m. for their first official game in the brand new arena.
