NEWARK, DE -- The fourth ranked Old Dominion field hockey team emerged with a 5-1 victory over CAA newcomer #17 Delaware on Sunday afternoon at Rullo Stadium in Newark, Delaware. The win improves the Lady Monarchs to 11-2 overall and 5-0 in conference play and extends Old Dominion's CAA win streak to 49 consecutive games. Delaware, playing in its CAA debut, drops to 6-5 overall and 1-0 in the CAA.
Reigning CAA Player of the Week Tiffany Snow (Escondido, CA) led the way with three goals and currently leads the team with 19 tallies on the year. Junior Angie Loy (Loysville, PA) and freshman Jennifer Angat (Va. Beach, VA) each added a goal. Loy, along with teammate Melissa Leonetti (Erdenheim, PA) each posted two assists off of penalty corners.
The Blue Hens struck first with Leah Gibb reaching the back of the Lady Monarch net on a pass from Erica LaBar 7:10 into the contest for an early 1-0 lead. However, Old Dominion would deny the Blue Hens from scoring the rest of the way. Within two minutes of Delaware's goal, Old Dominion established a 2-1 lead and never looked back. Angat tied the game at 1-1 on an unassisted goal 8:20 into the first half and just 32 seconds later Angie Loy tallied the game winner.
The Lady Monarchs scored three more goals, all by Snow, in the second half of play. Snow's first two goals came off of two of Old Dominion's 12 penalty corner attempts. She then completed the hat trick at the 62nd minute mark converting a penalty stroke, her fifth goal of the year off a stroke.
Freshman Mary Cate Gordon (Oreland, PA) made her first appearance in net for the Lady Monarchs, starting and playing all 70 minutes. She collected six saves and allowed just one goal. Delaware netminders Stephanie Judefind and Heidi Hibshman totaled nine saves in the loss.
The Lady Monarchs outshot Delaware 16-10 and outcornered the Blue Hens, 12-2.
The Old Dominion field hockey team will be idle this week. They return to action for a three-game home stand beginning with another CAA newcomer, Hofstra, on Thursday, October 17th.
