WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. -- The 23rd-ranked Wake Forest men's tennis team picked up a 4-3 victory over No. 69 Old Dominion Saturday afternoon at the Wake Forest Indoor Tennis Center. The Monarchs won two of three doubles matches to take a 1-0 lead, but the Demon Deacons won four of six singles matches to earn the victory.

The Demon Deacons' top doubles team, David Loewenthal and Trent Brendon, nearly upset the fourth-ranked pair from Old Dominion, Zoltan Csandadi (Timisoara, Romania) and Izak van der Merwe (Kempton Park, South Africa), falling 9-8 (4) in a tiebreaker. Wake Forest's Derrick Spice and Brett Ross paired up to win the number two doubles match 8-6 over Calin Milos (Timisoara, Romania) and Patrik Binkowski (Orby, Sweden), but the Monarchs were able to take the double point as at number three doubles as Salman Mohammed (Calcutta, India) and Niklas Oskarsson (Halmsted, Sweden) dispenced Mike Murray and Andrew Simpson, 8-5.

Van der Merwe and Mohammed earned wins in singles play, both defeating ranked players. Van der Merwe defeated #109 Mike Murray in three sets, 4-6, 6-4, 6-1, at second singles while Mohammed used a straight set 6-4, 6-1 match for the win over #123 Trent Brendon at fifth singles.

The Demon Deacon's Spice defeated Binkowski 6-1, 6-0 at number four singles and Wake Forest's Ross won the match-deciding match 6-3, 6-4 over Oskarsson at number six singles. Csanadi fell at first singles to #35 David Lowenthal, 6-4, 6-4. Csanadi has previously lost to Lowenthal earlier in the year in the consolation bracket of the Virginia Tournament in September.

Wake Forest improves to 2-0 on the season with the win and Old Dominion falls to 4-1 with the loss.

The Monarchs return to action tomorrow, Sunday February 2nd, against UNC-Greensboro.
