Men's Tennis Spilts Results With San Francisco And Fresno State

FRESNO, CALIF. -- The Old Dominion men's tennis team travel West this week after moving up three spots in the ITA Poll from #61 to #58. In their travels, the Monarchs picked up a 6-1 victory over the University of San Francisco and fell to #54 Fresno State, 4-2. The Monarchs (5-4 overall) will also play Southern Methodist in a neutral site match-up while in California.

On Friday, it was the Old Dominion men's tennis team walking away with the 6-1 victory over San Francisco. The Monarchs swept through the doubles match-ups and won five of the six singles matches.

On the doubles scene, Izak van der Merwe and Henrique Cancado teamed for a 8-6 No. 1 doubles win over Pablo Pires De Almeida and Fernando Rodriguez. At No. 2 doubles, ODU's Nate Grover and Juliano Cirimbelli defeated William )'Shea and Timo Kinele, 8-4. Doubles play ended with Eidy Igarashi and Rodrigo Souza picking up an 8-4 win over Rafael Corazza and Falko Huettenberger at No. 3 doubles.

In singles, #7 Izak van der Merwe rolled to a straight set win at No. 1 singles over Timo Kienle, 6-4, 6-4. Henrique Cancado played his way to a 6-0, 6-3 win at No. 2 singles over Andrew Hogan, while newcomer Eidy Igarashi come from a first set deficit to defeat Fernando Rodriguez, 4-6, 6-4, 6-1, at the No. 3 spot. Also earning victories for the Monarchs were Rodrigo Souza at No. 4 singles with a 6-0, 6-3 win over Falko Huettenberger and Adriano Mello downing Rafael Corazza, 6-3, 6-3, at No. 5 singles.

The Monarchs followed with a 4-2 loss to Fresno State on Saturday.

After Fresno State swept the doubles matches and earned the point, Old Dominion managed to collect two victories in singles.

Both Monarch victories came in straight sets. Seventh ranked Izak van der Merwe earned a 6-3, 6-2 decision over Serqui Modoc at No. 1 singles, while Eidy Igarashi downed Charles Irie, 6-3, 6-3. Fresno State meanwhile picked up wins at No. 2, No. 4, and No. 5 singles for the win.

The Monarchs will play Southern Methodist before traveling to #67 Brown on March 4th.
