Lady Monarch Basketball Defeats GMU, 71-51

Fairfax, VA-The Old Dominion women's basketball team notched another win against a CAA foe this afternoon with a 71-51 victory over George Mason. ODU is now 9-5, 6-0 CAA while the Patriots fall to 9-7, 3-2 CAA.
Old Dominion picked up their latest victory by outdistancing the Patriots in the second half, breaking open a 31-26 halftime lead with a 9 point run shortly after intermission. From that point on the Lady Monarchs simply wore down the opposition inside, repeatedly pounding away at the glass with senior forwards Lucienne Berthieu (Rennes, France) and Hamchetou Maiga (Bamako, Mali).
The Lady Monarch finished the game with a 55-37 advantage in rebounds, with 24 of their 71 points scored in the paint.
Berthieu led the team with 19 points and eight rebounds while Maiga recorded 12 points and nine boards. Guard Sharron Francis scored 13 while assisting with 5 baskets.
George Mason had one player score in double digits. Guard Laura Kooij tallied a game-high 21 points on a 8-18 shooting performance.
Old Dominion's next game will be at home, January 17 against new CAA foe Hofstra.
