Feb. 21, 2006
NORFOLK, VA--The Old Dominion University swimming and diving team will be heading up to Fairfax, Va. this weekend on the campus of George Mason University for the 2006 Colonial Athletic Association championships. Competition will start Wednesday February 22nd and go through Saturday February 25th. This season, the men's team finished with a 10-2 regular season mark while the women compiled a 3-9-1 overall record.
In last year's CAA Championships, the men's side completed the tournament 3rd overall in points, with then-freshman Patrik Balint (Budapest, Hungary) tying for 1st in points scored by individual swimmers. Current senior Nate Tschohl (Chesapeake, VA/Hickory) finished 17th overall while junior Michael DeNise (Midlothian, VA) took 18th.
The women were 8th overall as a team last season, with junior Lauren Timby (Rochester, NY) scoring 3rd overall in points with 54.
The men will be counting on Balint to duplicate his performance from last year, as he has put together a very strong 05-06 campaign, swimming the top time in the CAA in the 200 backstroke (1:48.63), the second fastest 100 backstroke (50.76), and placing in the top 10 in three other events this season.
ODU women will be highlighted by sophomore transfer Diana Hurst (Richmond, VA) who has asserted herself in the distance events, taking the top time in the 1650 freestyle (17:22.06), fourth fastest conference time in the 500 freestyle (5:05.64), along with an 8th place finish in the 200 butterfly (2:08.56)
Competition begins on Wednesday with women's diving prelims at 12:00 p.m, followed by the diving finals along with men's and women's 200 medley relay, and men's and women's 800 freestyle relays beginning at 6:00 p.m.
