Monarchs Eliminated From Singles; Doubles Team Moves On

NORFOLK, Va. -- Though all the Monarchs were eliminated from the main draw in singles action today at the 2009 ITA/Wilson Men's Atlantic Regional Championships, the doubles pairing of juniors Tobias Fanselow and Benjamin Chomette reached the quarterfinals and will continue play on Saturday.
Fanselow and Chomette both suffered heartbreaking singles losses on Friday, but bounced back in the evening with an 8-3 victory over Liberty's Louis Steyn and Ben Wirth to advance to the quarterfinals. The ODU tandem will face the number three seeded Virginia pair, Drew Courtney and Lee Singer on Saturday at 3:00 p.m.
The Monarchs other doubles team fell in the Round of 16 today, as Yakov Diskin and Krzysztof Muzalewski suffered an 8-5 loss to the top seeded and top ranked Virginia pair, Sanam Singh and Houston Barrick.
In singles play, Fanselow stretched the first set to a tiebreaker against Virginia's Milo Johnson, but would ultimately fall to the Cavalier 7-6 (4), 6-2. Diskin won the second set against his opponent, William & Mary's Jamie Whiteford, but the Tribe player would eventually put away the ODU senior in a long 6-4, 1-6, 7-6 (3) final.
Muzalewski lost in straight sets to third seeded Hokie Yoann Re, 6-1, 6-3 and Chomette would also fall in straight sets to Temple's Filip Rams, 6-2, 7-6 (7).
The ODU doubles team will return to the Folkes-Stevens Indoor Tennis Center on the campus of Old Dominion University for their match at 3:00 p.m. on Saturday.
