Lady Monarchs Fall to George Mason, 2-1
Oct. 21, 2001
Fairfax, VA-The frustration continued today for the Old Dominion women's soccer squad as they fell to CAA rival George Mason, 2-1. Old Dominion is now 3-8-2 (1-2-1 CAA) while the Patriots improve to 6-7-1 (2-1 CAA) and garner a tie for first place in the conference.
Both sides came out shooting early and exchanging scoring opportunities, but it was Mason's Sarah Wilkinson that found the net first for a 1-0 Patriot lead. Six minutes before the half ODU's Ashley Kramer (Jefferson Hills, PA) cashed in on a wild scramble in front of the Patriot net, putting in a deflected shot from teammate Anna Gruzalski (Oak Ridge, TN) for her first collegiate goal.
Shortly after intermission George Mason went ahead again, when forward Jayme Beamer got behind the Lady Monarch defense and scored on a one-touch pass. Forced to play catch-up, Old Dominion's comeback attempt nearly paid off the 80th minute, when senior forward Emily Becker (Va. Beach, VA) sent in a long, outside shot that beat the goalie but hit the crossbar. The ball bounced back into play but was quickly handled by the Patriot defense, who promptly proceeded to kill the clock. ODU threatened to score again in the final moments, but had each shot turned away by GMU keeper Naomi Hines, who finished with nine saves.
The Lady Monarchs finished with a 19-16 edge in shots and a 8-7 edge in corners. Monarch goalie Tonya Dedmond (North Potomac, MD) finished with five saves.
Old Dominion has now lost five games by one goal this year, including both losses in the CAA. The Lady Monarchs will finish out their season with three home games starting next weekend.
