Boston University Upsets #13 Old Dominion Women's LAX, 14-12

PHILADELPHIA, PA --- Junior midfielder Suzanne Wosczyna (Phoenixville, PA) brought the Lady Monarchs within one, 13-12, with just over five minutes remaining in the game after trailing by as many as four, but Boston University would stop the late Lady Monarch surge and add in an insurance goal as the #13 Old Dominion women's lacrosse team, 14-12, on a rainy neutral turf at Temple University.
The loss drops the Lady Monarchs to 6-3 on the year.
Wosczyna finished the game with five points on three goals and two assists. Senior midfielder Danielle Hensil (Havertown, PA) and sophomore Melody Shotwell (Fairfax Station, VA) each had four goals, while junior attack Janine Rodriguez (Davidsonville, MD) made three assists on the afternoon.
Senior co-captain Marlaine Smith (Gaithersburg, MD) led the team with six caused turnovers and four draw controls. Hensil and Wosczyna each had five groundballs in the loss.
In net, rookie Michelle Gannon (Delmar, MD) made five saves for the Lady Monarchs.
Following a half hour thunderstorm delay, the Lady Monarchs established a 2-1 lead with 22:03 left in the opening half, but the Terriers would score three unanswered goals to take over the lead for good. The Terriers took their largest lead, 8-4, with 4:56 left in the first half, but Old Dominion would cut the Boston University to two at half trailing 8-6.
Both teams scored six goals in the second half as the Terriers were able to stop a late second half surge by the Lady Monarchs. Down 11-8 with 15 minutes remaining in the game, Wosczyna and Shotwell scored back-to-back goals within a span of a minute to close the gap to within one, 11-10.
Defense took over the final minutes of the second half. The Terriers managed to get one into the back of the Old Dominion net with just over 11 minutes remaining to go back up by two. Then Hensil, off an assist from Wosczyna, again brought Old Dominion with one with 9:21 remaining on the clock. However Boston University once again extended its lead by two with 6:27 left. Wosczyna scored at point blank range to again cut the Lady Monarch deficit to one, 13-12, with 5:49 on the clock, but the Terriers added in an insurance goal with 3:02 left in regulation to seal the victory.
The Lady Monarchs return to action tomorrow, Sunday, March 30th, against Temple at 1:00 p.m.
