Lady Monarchs Top VCU to Earn First CAA Win of Season

NORFOLK, VA (October 12) -- Three different Lady Monarchs scored first-half goals to lead Old Dominion to a 3-0 shutout of CAA-rival Virginia Commonwealth at the Old Dominion Soccer Stadium. The win snaps a three-game skid for ODU (6-6-0, 1-4-0), while VCU (1-10-2, 0-5-0) drops its fourth straight.

Sophomore forward Melanie McGovern (Somerdale, NJ) got the Lady Monarchs on the board in the 12th minute on a 15 yard blast off the right side on an assist from midfielder Anna Gruzalski (Oak Ridge, TN). Old Dominion later took a 2-0 lead on sophomore defender Andi Rowe?s (Fairfax, VA) second career goal at the 26:30 mark.

Old Dominion went up 3-0 on sophomore forward Jen Henley?s (Chalfont, PA) five yard strike on a ball served up by sophomore forward Trisha Stant (West Chester, PA). At the half, ODU held a 13-2 advantage in shots on goal and a 9-0 advantage in corners.

In the second half, Old Dominion played its substitutes for much of the period and forged another nine shots but was unable to connect for a fourth goal. Sophomore goalkeeper?s Tonya Dedmond (North Potomac, MD) and Alison Kinsler (Virginia Beach, VA) combined for the shutout for the Lady Monarchs.

VCU keeper Lindy Brown, ranked tenth in the country in saves-per-game, recorded four for the Lady Rams. For the game, ODU won the shots on goal battle, 22-6, and led in corners 13-0.

Old Dominion returns to action on Friday night as they travel to Richmond, VA, to take on the CAA-rival Spiders at 7 pm.
