COLORADO SPRINGS, CO -- ODU freshman James Nicholson (Des Moines, IA) won the challenge tournament in Colorado Springs at the FILA Junior World Team Trials. He then advanced to the freestyle finals where he was defeated by Tyler Graff (Loveland, CO) in two rounds. He is now an alternate on the FILA Junior World team that will represent the USA in China in August. Also competing in Colorado Springs was Monarch starter Jesse Strawn, who was defeated in the challenge tournament.
Nicholson and Strawn both represented the King of the Jungle at the challenge tournament. Strawn's tournament, at 84 KG, was halted by Penn State's Mike Ward after a tight championship bracket loss to Underdog Wrestling's Jeff James. James defeated Strawn by a final score of 3-2, 1-4, 3-2 before Ward eliminated the ODU wrestler by a score of 0-6, 6-6, 8-3.
Nicholson advanced in the 55 KG tournament with a win over Bloomsburg's Ian Moser, representing Husky Wrestling. Nicholson won quickly in the first two periods, 3-2, 1-0. He advanced to wrestle Ben Ashmore (Oklahoma State University), who was ranked number one in high school at 119-lbs by both USA Wrestling and Amateur Wrestling News. The rookie went 12-3 in his redshirt season at OSU. Nicholson dropped the first period 0-6, but came back to win the second and third periods 4-1, 3-0 for the victory.
Nicholson advanced to Saturday's final against Graff, one of the nation's premier high school wrestlers. Graff dropped Nicholson in two straight technical falls to take the spot on the Junior World Team at 55 KG. Nicholson will be an alternate for the FILA Junior Worlds in China in August.
