Van der Merwe, Grover Ranked In Preseason ITA Poll

NORFOLK, Va.-- Men's tennis student-athletes Izak van der Merwe (Kempton Park, South Africa) was ranked #9 in singles and #26 in doubles along with teammate sophomore Nate Grover it was announced by the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) in their preseason poll released on Friday.
Van der Merwe, a 2004 All-American, CAA Player of the Year, and CAA Tournament's Most Outstanding Performer, had a highly successful campaign as a junior last year. Ranked 20th in the final ITA Poll, he concluded his season with a 31-11 singles mark, which included a Round of 16 appearance in the NCAA Tournament and 13 wins over ranked opponents.
In doubles competition, van der Merwe and former Monarch and All-American Zoltan Csanadi, teamed for a brilliant run in the 2004 NCAA Tournament in which they advanced to the semifinals. The duo finished the year ranked 14th with a 14-6 overall doubles record, which also included appearances in the finals of the ITA National Indoor Championships and the UVA Fall Classic and the semifinals of the ITA All-American Championships.
Grover, in his first season as a Monarch, posted a 12-12 doubles mark playing with van der Merwe, former Monarch Calin Milos, and current junior Adriano Mello (Londrina, Brazil). Among van der Merwe and Grover's wins was a 8-6 No. 1 doubles victory over the 19th ranked team of Brandon Allan and Kai Schledorn of Middle Tennessee State.
The Old Dominion men's tennis team finished the 2004 season with a 14-10 overall record reaching the finals of the Colonial Athletic Association (CAA) Tennis Tournament. The Monarchs were ranked 56th in the final ITA Men's Tennis Team Poll.
