NORFOLK, Va. - Head coach Steve Martin and the Old Dominion wrestling program announced that Mike Dixon and Jon Sioredas both have accepted promotions to the first and second assistant coaches for the team. In addition, former Oklahoma All-American Matt Storniolo has joined the staff as a volunteer assistant coach.

Dixon returns as the number one assistant to Coach Martin after already coaching two years at Old Dominion. He is one of very few upper weight coaches in the country and has already proven to be an asset in the wrestling room.

"We are pleased to announce the promotion of Mike Dixon to the number one assistant," said Martin. "He's a very hard worker and a great asset to our program as far as recruiting goes."

Sioredas returns for his second year at Old Dominion, and first as a full-time coach with the program. He has brought his experience as an All-American at the University of Tennessee-Chattanooga and technical knowledge of the sport to the ODU wrestling team. Prior to joining the Chattanooga squad, Sioredas wrestled for three seasons at the University of Missouri where he was an All Big XII athlete. In 2000, Jon was a VHSL AAA State Champion and All-American under Coach Martin at Great Bridge High School in Chesapeake, Va.

"Sioredas is no stranger to success. He is a great example for the guys to follow," said Martin. "He is tremendous in the room as far as teaching technique goes and he's also a great recruiter."

Finally, ODU has announced the addition of one of the top NCAA wrestlers over the last four years as the volunteer assistant coach. Matt Storniolo was a two-time All-American at Oklahoma as well as being ranked second heading into the NCAA Tournament after his first Big 12 championship in his senior season. He finished second in the Big 12 Tournament in both his sophomore and junior years and he went on to finish 7th and 4th in the NCAA Tournament in those seasons.

Before Oklahoma, Storniolo wrestled at Penn State and was named the Big Ten Freshman of the Year as he finished second in the Big Ten Tournament. He wrestled in Pennsylvania throughout high school and has a vast knowledge of the state, considered by many to be the best wrestling state in the nation.

"Storniolo obviously has tremendous credentials in his wrestling career. He has a wealth of knowledge, having wrestled at both Penn State and Oklahoma and he will help us out immediately," said Martin. "He has a great reputation as a technician and has been around wrestling his whole life."

The changes in the wrestling staff come during a summer where the team has garnered its third straight Top 20 recruiting class. Coaching has been an integral piece to the puzzle as last season the Monarchs started eight first- or second-year wrestlers. Coach Martin and his new-look staff are expecting much of the same youth heading into the 2007-08 wrestling season as ODU continues to make strides toward becoming a national power.
