Monarch Tennis Closes Out Regular Season Blanking George Mason

NORFOLK, VA -- The Old Dominion men's tennis squad finished out the 2002-03 dual meet season blanking its eighth opponent of the year with a 7-0 victory over CAA rival George Mason. The victory improves the Monarchs to 14-6 overall and 2-2 in the CAA as they head into the CAA Championships this weekend.
The Monarchs swept the doubles easily in the win. The seventh ranked duo of junior Zoltan Csadadi (Timisoara, Romania) and sophomore Izak van der Merwe (Kempton Park, South Africa) rolled to a 8-3 win over Tito Ballester and Stephan Dufils at No. 1 doubles. At No. 2 doubles, senior Salman Mohammed (Calcutta, India) and Patrik Binkowski (Orby, Sweden) defeated Tim Bainton and Cem Akalin, 8-2, while at No. 3 doubles, ODU's tandem of freshman Adriano Mello (Londrina, Brazil) and junior Niklas Oskarsson (Halmsted, Sweden) did not allow a single set to be lost, defeating Miles Hughes and Jorge Ramallo, 8-0.
Old Dominion wrapped up play taking all six singles matches in straight sets. Highlighting singles play were junior Niklas Oskarsson and freshman Adriano Mello, who each won 6-0, 6-0, at No. 5 and No. 6 singles respectively. At No. 4 singles, senior Salman Mohammed gave up just one set, downing Cem Akalin, 6-1, 6-0. Senior Patrik Binkowski picked up a 6-3, 6-3 win over Stephan Dufils at No. 3 singles, while sophomore Izak van der Merwe earned a 6-2, 6-2 victory over the Patriots' Tim Bainton, 6-2, 6-2. Junior Zoltan Csanadi won his No. 1 singles match with a 6-3, 6-2 decision over Tito Ballester.
The Monarchs will return to action this weekend as they travel to the CAA Championships in Richmond, VA.
