Cahana Advances To Second Round Of National Indoor Championships

FARMERS BRANCH, TX -- Sophomore All-American Nataly Cahana (Quiriat Bialik, Israel) advanced to the second round of the Omni Hotels 2001 National Indoor Championships. Seeded second in the singles draw, Cahana defeated Helen Lawson of Boise State in straight sets, 6-3, 7-5.
Cahana will face Agata Cioroch of the University of Georgia in the second round on Friday afternoon.
The doubles team of Cahana and senior Ana Radeljevic (Zagreb, Croatia) were defeated in their first round match, but continue play in the consolation bracket. The duo were defeated 8-0 by Lauren Barnikow and Erin Burdette of Stanford. In the consolation bracket, Cahana and Radeljevic advanced to the semi-final round with a 8-3 win of Victoria Dominga and Brenda Magnetti of Ouachia Baptist. The two will face the Texas Tech tandem of Beverly Dawson and Irena Tereschenko on Friday.
The Omni Hotels National Intercollegiate Indoor Championships feature a 32-player singles field and 16-team doubles field for men and women, including: qualifiers from Omni Hotels Regional Championships held across the country during last month, the ITA National Small College champions, the winners of the ITA and Riviera All-American Championships and at-large and wild card selections made by the ITA National Tournament Committee. Overall, more than 10,000 players from nearly 600 schools participate annually in the Omni Hotels Regional and National Intercollegiate Championships. The men's tournament was inaugurated in 1978 and the women's tournament began in 1984.
