Charlottesville, Va. - The Old Dominion University women's rowing team closed out what has been a strong fall season on Sunday, finishing in the top half of the field in both races at the Rivanna Romp in Charlottesville.
In the Women's Novice 8, the Lady Monarchs had to overcome an unusual set of circumstances to place third out of the eight boats entered in the event. After passing a boat from Tennessee with 1,700 meters to go, the ODU boat found trouble when a pile of leaves got caught in the rudder, dropping the Lady Monarchs back in the field. However, after digging out the leaves the Lady Monarchs rallied down the stretch to move back in front of the Tennessee crew, securing third place.
The Lady Monarchs finished 10th in the 23-team field of the Women's 4+ with a time of 15:41.28. The boats that finished ahead of ODU were from four schools that finished ranked in the top 20 last season, Virginia, Ohio State, Tennessee and Miami, giving the Lady Monarchs a vote of confidence heading into winter conditioning.
"Today's results were a tremendous way for us to round out our first fall as a varsity program," said Lady Monarch head coach Heather Weisel. "The team handled some top level competition both competently and confidently. It was a great opportunity to see how the work we've all done as a team would translate very early in the year. We have such a long journey ahead but this was a huge step in the right direction."
