PHILADELPHIA, Pa. -- The Frosh/Novice Eight brought home a silver medal from the prestigious Dad Vail Regatta on Saturday as the Old Dominion women's rowing team concluded its first ever season. Along with the Frosh/Novice Eight, the Varsity Four also took to the Schuykill River in the event's semi-finals.

The Varsity Four was in a tight race in Saturday's semi-finals. Two of the six entries would advance to the final and the Lady Monarchs came up just short of that the qualifying second spot finishing just behind Jacksonville in third. Old Dominion rowed its way to time of 7:32.92 with Brock crossing the finish line at 7:26.21 and Jacksonville finishing at the 7:28.12 mark to reach the finals.

"It was a heartbreaker of a race" said ODU head coach Heather Weisel. "The team had worked so hard in these last two weeks to prepare for this. To know we had the 6th fastest overall heat time and have that not make the cut was so tough. However, what we learned from this experience will move us forward as a program."

The Frosh/Novice Eight took to the water first for the event's semi-finals. The Lady Monarchs won their semi-final heat in a time of 6:53.16 edging out second place and fellow finalist Saint Joseph's by nearly three seconds. The Hawks took second and joined the Lady Monarchs in final with a time of 6:56.37.

In the finals, the Frosh/Novice boat had one of the more exciting races of the day with the lead changing places four times over the course. First, UConn was out front, then Buffalo slipped ahead. With about 300 to go, ODU moved ahead only to be edged out by Buffalo in the very last few strokes claiming the title by a mere second with a finishing time of 7:19.20. The Lady Monarchs went on to take home the silver medal as they crossed the finish line in a time of 7:20.32.

"Winning a silver medal at this race in our very first year and having all three boats do well is an amazing achievement for our whole team and coaching staff," said Weisel of her team's performance at this year's Dad Vail Regatta. "Every single student-athlete on this team contributed to our success and they deserve all the credit for embracing this start up in the way they did. We asked a lot and they kept delivering. The parents and supporters of our team had such a huge impact on our ability to be successful, as well, and we can't thank them enough. I am so proud of this team and we're all really looking forward to next year."
