Next Up for the Wrestling Monarchs: The CAA Duals

NORFOLK, Va. - The Old Dominion University wrestling team will be back in action on Saturday, Jan. 19, for the Colonial Athletic Association Duals in Fairfax, Va. Boston University, Binghamton, Drexel, George Mason, Hofstra and Rider will join Old Dominion in a four round dual-off. ODU will wrestle a total of three matches on Saturday against: Boston, Drexel and Hofstra.

Match #1:
The Monarchs will take on the Terriers from Boston University in the first match of the day at 10 a.m. The Terriers are currently 4-1 in their duals meets so far this season, with wins over: Bridgewater State, Franklin and Marshall, Sacred Heart and American International. Boston’s sole loss was to Binghamton, 26-13. 157-pounder, No. 26 Nestor Taffur is Boston’s only ranked wrestler.

Match #2:
Around noon, ODU will grapple with the Dragons from Drexel University. The Dragons are currently 5-7 in their dual meets so far this season. Drexel has two nationally ranked wrestlers in No. 27 Frank Cimato (141) and No. 19 Brandon Palik (197).

Match #3:
Old Dominion’s third and final match will take place around 2 p.m., when they will take on the Pride of Hoftsra University. Although Hofstra has faced a difficult schedule, the Pride have only managed to win one of their 12 dual meets thus far. Like the Monarchs, Hofstra currently has five nationally ranked wrestlers: No. 19 Steve Bonanno (125), No. 29 Jamie Franco (133), No. 15 Luke Vaith (141), No. 33 Jermaine John (174) and No. 24 Paul Snyder (HWT). 

The Old Dominion Monarchs Round-Up:
Last weekend, Old Dominion competed in the 33rd annual Virginia Duals in Hampton, Va. The Monarchs ended up placing eighth.

ODU currently have five nationally ranked wrestlers:
-Jerome Robinson (125): No. 14
-Chris Mecate (141): No. 15
-Alexander Richardson (149): No. 30
-John Nicholson (157): No. 18
-Billy Curling (174): No. 31

This past week, Chris Mecate won the ‘CAA Rookie Wrestler of the Week’ award. The 141-pound redshirt freshman from Highland, California, went 2-1 this past weekend in his first ever Virginia Duals. Mecate’s only loss came at the hands of No. 5 Mitchell Port (Edinboro) in a 7-3 decision. After that loss, Mecate went on to defeat Kyle Bauer (Kent State) 2-0 and Mark Erickson (North Dakota State) 8-3.

Round One (10 a.m.)
Mat #1: Boston University vs. Old Dominion
Mat #2: Binghamton vs. Drexel
Mat #3: Rider vs. George Mason

Round Two (11:45 a.m.)
Mat #1: Drexel vs. Old Dominion
Mat #2: Boston University vs. Hofstra
Mat #3: George Mason vs. Binghamton

Round Three (1:30 p.m.)
Mat #1: Rider vs. Binghamton
Mat #2: Hofstra vs. Old Dominion
Mat #3: George Mason vs. Boston University

Round Four (3:15 p.m.)
Mat #3: George Mason vs. Hofstra
