BAY ST. LOUIS, MS (Nov. 17, 2000) -- The Old Dominion University sailing team will be competing for their 12th national championship today when they begin competition at the ICSA Sloop National Championships. The last time Old Dominion captured the sloop national championship was 1992, when the Monarchs captured the title in Honolulu, Hawaii.

The Monarch sloop squad advanced to the title round by virtue of a second-place finish at the MAISA Championships on October 1. The sloop squad will probably consist of senior All-American Adam Burns (Youngstown, NY), senior Justin Castagne (Trinidad, West Indies), Brock Callen (Martha's Vineyard, MA) and Ted Anderson (Norwalk, CT)?the team that competed at the MAISA Championship.

The Monarchs recently competed in two other championship competitions this fall?the ICSA men's and women's Singlehanded Championships in Seattle, WA. Brad Funk (Harbor Bluffs, FL) finished seventh in the competition while fellow sailor Sally Barkow (Nashotah, WI) took ninth.
