NORFOLK, VA - The Old Dominion women's lacrosse team exploded for 19 goals, the most in a game since 1996, as the Lady Monarchs defeated UMBC, 19-11, in its home opener on Foreman Field on Saturday afternoon.

The 19 goals scored by the Lady Monarchs were the most since 1996 when Old Dominion defeated then conference rival American, 20-3.

Senior midfielder Suzanne Wosczyna (Phoenixville, PA) netted seven in the victory, while junior attacker Melody Shotwell (Fairfax Station, VA) was just one behind Wosczyna with six. Wosczyna added in two assists on the afternoon to record nine points for the second straight game. In all, seven different Lady Monarchs reached the back of the Retriever net.

UMBC was led by Kelly Fahey, Jen Dragoni, and Kate Worthington with two goals apiece. Both Fahey and Dragoni added in an assist to lead the Retrievers with three points.

UMBC went up 3-1 within in the first ten minutes of play, but from there, the Old Dominion defense would allow the Retrievers to score just two more goals within the half. With the Retrievers up 4-3, Old Dominion scored five answered goals to take the lead for good and enter the half up 8-5.

The Lady Monarchs outscored UMBC 11-6 in the second half of play.

In net, sophomore Michelle Gannon posted 10 saves, while UMBC's Jena Goldstein and Kristina Raab combined for eight.

The Lady Monarchs return to action on Wednesday, March 17th, when they host Richmond at Foreman Field at 4:00 p.m.
