32nd Annual Stihl Soccer Classic Begins Friday

NORFOLK, VA--The 32nd edition of the STIHL Soccer Classic, presented by the Harbor Front Kiwanis and the Sheraton Norfolk Waterside Hotel begins this weekend Friday, Sept. 14, and Sunday Sept. 16 with two games each day featuring William and Mary, Temple, Dartmouth, and host Old Dominion at the ODU Soccer Stadium. This will be the Monarchs home opener.

Action begins Friday with William and Mary (1-2) taking on Temple (2-1-1) at 4:30 and Old Dominion (1-2-1) playing Dartmouth (1-1-1) at 7 p.m. On Sunday William and Mary meets Dartmouth at 12 noon and ODU takes on Temple at 2:30.

Temple, coached by David MacWilliams are led by McKensen Altidor and Max Kinderwater. Altidor, a junior was named Defensive MVP at the Drexel Tournament last weekend and Atlantic 10 Player of the Week. Kinderwater, a freshman midfielder was named the Atlantic 10 Rookie of the Week as he scored the winning goal against Howard and also assisted on another. He is currently tied for the team lead in scoring with three points.

Dartmouth, coached by Jeff Cooke defeated Sacred Heart and tied tenth ranked Northwestern last weekend. Craig Henderson leads with two goals thus far this season, while goalkeeper Sean Milligan has two shutouts and a 0.61 goals against average. Milligan was named Ivy League Player of the Week.

The Tribe of William and Mary are coached by Chris Norris. Leading the Tribe is 2006 All-CAA midfielder Doug Ernst who led the league with nine assists last year. The Tribe are 24-12-4 (.650) all-time at the event, winning the championship on four occasions (1987, 1992, 1998 and 2006).

The Monarchs return for their home opener after just completing a grueling road stretch against top ranked Wake Forest, 12th ranked Ohio State and 16th ranked North Carolina.

Junior midfielder Trevor Banks (Madison, WI.) leads the Monarchs with two goals and one assist. He scored both goals against Ohio State and assisted on the game winner against Penn State and was named CAA Player of the Week.

Banks is currently tied for third in the CAA with two goals and tied for fourth in total points with five. ODU sophomore goalkeeper Evan Newton is tied for first in the CAA with 20 saves. The Monarchs have won the tournament title 12 times, the last in 2004. Overall, ODU is 43-14-3 in the Classic. This will be the Monarchs first ever meeting against both Dartmouth and Temple.

Tickets are $5 for adults and $4 for children, 17 and under, ODU faculty staff, Military and senior citizens. ODU students are admitted free with their ODU student I.D.
