Nate Grover Captures Singles And Doubles Titles At Hampton Roads Collegiate Invite Of Newport News

NEWPORT NEWS, Va. -- Senior Nate Grover (Suffolk, Va.) won the Flight C singles and Flight B doubles titles at the Hampton Roads Collegiate Invitational on Sunday. Additionally Alex Seleznev (Bishkek, Kyrgyz Republic) won the Flight A consolation bracket.
Grover, who earlier won two matches in the bracket, picked up play in the quarterfinals where he defeated the CAA's Carlin Campbell of James Madison, 6-4, 6-1. In the semifinals, Grover picked up a 6-1, 7-5 win over Ramsey LeMaich. In the finals, Grover's opponent, Stanley Kahl of Navy withdrew due to injury.
Grover teamed with junior Rodrigo Souza (Rio de Janeiro, Brazil) win four matches en-route to the doubles title. After an opening round victory over the doubles entry from Delaware, Grover and Souza downed Longwood's David Cardoso and Billy Heird, 8-3, in the quarterfinals. The semifinals saw the Monarch duo edged out Will Lowell and Keng Wong of Georgetwon, 8-6, and followed with an 8-3 win over Jon Bair and Rashko Patnikov of Longwood in the final for the title.
Seleznev picked up four wins in the consolation bracket. He began play with an 8-3 win over David Cardoso of Longwood in the Round of 16 and advanced from the quarterfinals after Navy's John Water withdrew due to injury. In the semifinals, Seleznev downed Ted Tywang of Georgetown and went on to capture the bracket title with an 8-2 win over CAA rival Jesse Tarr of James Madison.
In other singles action, four Monarchs ended singles action in the quarterfinals. Souza ended play in the quarterfinals of the Flight A bracket with a 6-2, 6-2 loss to Alex Israel of CAA rival Virginia Commonwealth. Freshman Yakov Diskin (Yorktown, Va.) concluded play in the quarterfinals of the Flight B bracket falling, 6-3, 6-1 to Gavid Tillem of Georgetown. Senior Dom Manilla (Greenwood, Va.) also ended the day in the quarterfinals of the Flight C bracket with a 6-1, 6-3 loss to Loyola's Matt McDaniel. Freshman Daniel Pabon (Va. Beach, Va.) ended his singles run in the quarterfinals of the Flight D bracket with a 6-1, 6-0 setback to Navy's Alex James.
In other doubles action, Diskin and Seleznev fell in the quarterfinals of the Flight A doubles bracket. The Monarch entry was edged by Brandon Harris and Sam Sayler of George Washington, 8-4.
