Bark In the Park Night As Monarchs Host Tribe In Three-Game CAA Series

NORFOLK, VA-- The ODU Baseball Monarchs return home for a three-game CAA series against the Tribe of William and Mary, beginning Friday at 6:05 p.m. Friday's game at the Bud Metheny Complex will be the first ever "Bark in the Park night." Saturday's game is at 4 p.m. and Sunday is at 1 p.m.

This series will decide the Optima Health Challenge between ODU and W&M. The schools are currently tied 55-55 in total points.

Both Friday and Saturday games can be heard live on STAR1310 AM Radio with ODU director of Broadcasting Ted Alexander and Doug Ripley providing the play-by-play.

The Tribe comes into the series at 26-13 overall and 9-3 in the CAA. Michael Katz leads the Tribe with a .422 batting average along with 27 RBI, followed by Ryan Lindemuth at .333 with a team best 39 runs scored. William Shaw leads W&M in homers with three and RBI with 28.

On the mound the Tribe will start righthander Brett Koehler (4-3/4.24 ERA) on Friday, righthander John Farrell (7-0/1.78 ERA) on Saturday and lefthaner Jason Inghram (5-3/3.36 ERA) on Sunday. Farrell is second in the CAA in ERA and has walked only seven batters in over 70 innings of work. He also ranks second in the league in strikeouts with 54.

ODU will counter with junior righthander Dean Ali (2-2/2.38 ERA) on Friday, junior lefthander Andy Roberts (2-3/3.13 ERA) on Saturday. Sunday's starter has not been designated. Ali ranks sixth in the CAA in ERA and is ninth in strikeouts.

Junior Ben Verlander leads the CAA in homers with 10, and is seventh in hitting at .375. Designated hitter Ben Slaton is at .329, while Josh Eldridge is hitting 303. Verlander leads in RBI with 29, followed by Eldridge with 28 and Slaton with 22.

ODU leads the series 75-50 and won two of three games last year in Willliamsburg. In 2011, the Tribe won two of three here at ODU.

"Bark in the Park" is a partnership with the Norfolk SPCA. This is the only opportunity pet owners have to bring their pet out to an ODU game with them. This event will feature appearances by Charles the Monarch, the Flying Jacks Stunt Dog team, and numerous adoptable pets from the Norfolk SPCA. The first 500 fans in the gates will receive a free ODU Bandana and the first 250 pets receive a free ODU collar.

A discounted ticket is being offered from $3 for anyone who brings a donation for the SPCA. Donations may include towels, bleach, detergent, cat litter, and paper towels.

Optima Health Challenge With the Optima Health Challenge knotted up at 55 points apiece, this weekend's baseball series between W&M and ODU will determine the 2012-13 winner. The Optima Health Challenge is running score of all the direct competitions between W&M and ODU. For the second consecutive year, the Tribe and Monarchs have partnered with title sponsor, Optima Health, for the Challenge.
