Women's Tennis Defeats Evansville, 6-1

HILTON HEAD, S.C. -- The Old Dominion women's tennis team defeated Evansville, 6-1, on Thursday morning to improve its overall mark to 10-2 on the season.
The Lady Monarchs captured two of three doubles matches for the first point of the afternoon and the cruised to wins in five of six singles matches.
The doubles portion of the match was highlighted by an 8-0 win by the Lady Monarch duo of Charleen Haarhoff (Durban, South Africa) and Fernanda Luiz (Nova Lima, Brazil). Playing at No. 1 doubles they defeated Brittany Brown and Beth Peyton. ODU's other doubles win came at No. 3 doubles from Jana Kubickova and Linda Garder (Tallinn, Estonia) with an 8-4 victory over Allison Cox and Stephanie Mills.
Kubickova gave up only one game highlighting the Lady Monarchs singles effort. The first year Lady Monarch downed Cox in the first set, 6-1, and blanked her Evansville opponent, 6-0, in the second.
Other winners included Haarhoff at No. 1 singles with a 6-2, 6-0 win over Brown. Fernanda Luiz (Nova Lima, Brazil) picked up a 7-5, 6-0 victory at No. 2 singles over Peyton. Barbara Costa (Belo Horizonte, Brazil) defeated Sara Wilhoite at No. 5 singles, 6-2, 6-2, while Garder collected a 6-2, 6-2 win over Mills.
The Lady Monarch women's tennis team returns to action on Saturday, March 17th in two matches. ODU will take on Norfolk State at 9:00 a.m. and Georgetown at 2:00 p.m. The matches will take place at Norfolk State.
