NEWARK, DE -- Old Dominion junior Jennifer Heister scored five goals, including four in the first half, as the Lady Monarchs upset No. 13 ranked University of Delaware 11-6 in a non-league women’s lacrosse game Saturday afternoon at Rullo Stadium.

Old Dominion (1-1), which opened the season with a 14-9 loss to No. 8 Virginia Wednesday, won its first game of the season and downed Delaware after falling to Hens each of the last two seasons. The Lady Monarchs jumped out to a 5-0 lead, thanks to three goals from Heister, and never looked back.

Delaware, which opened the season with as 12-7 win over Richmond last Saturday, got two goals and two assists from Ashley Moderacki while Liz Walton also tallied twice.

Suzanne Wosczyna added three goals and assist, Dana Wisniewski scored twice, and Marlaine Smith chipped in with a goal and an assist to lead the Monarchs, who outshot Delaware 28-19. ODU goalkeeper Laurie Koller posted seven saves in the win.

Delaware’s Laurie Tortorelli posted 10 saves for the Blue Hens.

After building a 6-3 halftime lead, Old Dominion scored the first three goals of the second half to go up 9-3. Delaware answered with a goal by Moderacki at the 23:40 mark, but the Hens would not score again until the final minute of play.

Delaware will return to play March 14 at Rutgers as the Hens embark on a six-game, 24-day road trip.
