Monarchs In The Pros: Updates On Tzipi Obziler and Izak Van Der Merwe

NORFOLK, Va. -- Two former Old Dominion tennis players, Tzipi Obziler and Izak van der Merwe, have recently picked up professional wins. Obziler reached the second round of the ladies' qualifying singles bracket at Wimbledon and is currently ranked 129th, while Izak van der Merwe has earned 12 ATP doubles points and is playing in the main draw of the Dick's Sporing Good Men's Futures in Pittsburg this week.
Obziler defeated Jade Curtis of England in straight sets in her opening qualifying singles match, 6-3, 6-0, before falling to the United States' Ashley Harkleroad in the second round, 4-6, 2-6.
Van der Merwe is currently being coach by former Old Dominion Monarch, Rodrigo Laender. Laender has coached professionally at grand slam tournaments and had a player participate for Brazil in Davis Cup.
Van der Merwe won three qualifying singles match to advance to the main draw of the Dick's Sporting Goods Men's Futures and will team with UVA's Treat Huey in doubles. The duo received a wild card invitation to the tournament after they won the Buffalo Bills 2005 Tennis Futures in Williamsville, New York earlier in the month.
