Miami plays Indiana State on Saturday for fifth place. Indiana State beat American University of Puerto Rico 85-58 Friday.
Miami coach Charlie Coles, whose team was 15-15 last season but lost four starters, said his team learned a lesson from Thursday's 60-59 loss to Memphis.
"We had more poise tonight in the stretch," Coles said. "We made more defensive stops. Last night, every time we would get close we would make silly mistakes.'"
The Monarchs will play host American University at Puerto Rico at 10 am eastern time Saturday. Old Dominion played without freshman point guard Troy Nance who injured his left ankle in Thursday night's game against Stanford. He is still questionable for Saturday.
