Van Der Merwe, Grover Qualify For Main Draw Of Icy Hot/ITA All-American Championships

CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. -- The Old Dominion University men's tennis duo of senior Izak van der Merwe (Kempton Park, South Africa) and sophomore Nate Grover (Suffolk, Va.) became one of eight doubles teams to advance out of the qualifying bracket into the main draw of the 2004 Icy Hot/ITA All-American Championships.
The Monarch doubles team is one of eighteen top-50 tandems are in the doubles draw. In order to reach the October 7-10 main draw, players had to have won three doubles matches.
Van der Merwe and Grover, ranked fourth in the qualifying bracket and 26th nationally in the ITA Preseason Poll, defeated Texas' Hubert Chodkiewicz and Roger Gubser 8-5 to clinch their spot in the main draw.
Previously, the tandem opened play with an 8-4 victory over Tejeshwara Chigateri and Federico Ueltschi of Montana State and advanced to the round of 16 with a 8-5 win over Drew Eberly and Dennis Mertens of Ohio State.
The Icy Hot/ITA Men's All-American Championships offer the first national singles and doubles titles of the season, and are followed by the ITA National Intercollegiate Indoor Championships in November and the third event is the season-ending NCAA Championships in May.
