Jan. 20, 2009
NORFOLK, Va. -- Two Monarch wrestlers were honored by the Colonial Athletic Association this week, as Chris Brown (Chesapeake, Va./Great Bridge) was named Co-Wrestler of the Week and true freshman Joe Budi (Appleton, Wisc./Kaukauna) was named Co-Rookie of the Week. Old Dominion went 3-0 at the CAA Duals to improve to 12-5 overall and 4-0 in the CAA, led by Brown and Budi who both upset nationally ranked opponents this weekend.
Brown, the Monarchs 165-pounder, defeated Hofstra's Ryan Patrovich, ranked 20th in the nation, en route to the first ever CAA defeat for the Pride. Brown is ranked 13th nationally by Amateur Wrestling News and also posted bonus point victories against Binghamton and Drexel wrestlers ranked fourth and sixth in the conference. His win over Patrovich was the third over a nationally ranked wrestler this season.
Budi, a true freshman at 184 lbs, went 2-1 at the Duals, including the biggest win of his young career. He pinned #8 Josh Patterson (Binghamton) in the first match of the day. He also won against the conference's third ranked wrestler, Justin Weiller (Drexel). Budi is second on the team in pins with seven and has posted 20 wins as a rookie, leading the team in technical falls with four.
They share the awards this week with a pair of Hofstra wrestlers, Lou Ruggirello as Wrestler of the Week and Justin Accordino as Rookie.
