ODU Wrestling Falls To Drexel In Consolation Round At Virginia Duals

HAMPTON, VA - Old Dominion Wrestling fell to conference rival Drexel today in their second round of consolation at the Virginia Duals, held at the Hampton Coliseum. The Monarchs fought into double overtime in the final bout before falling 17-24.

Starting off at 125, freshman Bryan LaShomb fell to his Dragon opponent by a close 11-8 decision. Next at 133, freshman Ryan Williams was just dominated by Drexel's Zach Makovsky as he fell by a 10-3 decision. Monarch sophomore B.J. Compton (141) brought the team score a little closer with a pin at the 2:31 mark.

Right when the ODU thought they were getting closer to narrowing Drexel's lead Jeff Becker (149), and Nick Pullano (157) both are pinned by there Drexel adversaries. Then came the bout at 165 pounds, Robby Gosnell came out firing and landed a 9-1 major decision over Scott Hunter of the Dragons.

Grad student TJ Hansen (174) fell to Nick Kosar 7-4. Before David Mendoza (184) took the mat and edged a 4-2 decision over Justin Turhune. That win set the stage for a commanding 20-5 win by tech fall by senior Adam Wright as he beat his Drexel opponent at 197 pounds.

Entering the final bout of match, the heavyweight class, the score had ODU trailing 21-7. ODU senior grappler John Dolida battled Drexel's Chris Cowen to a 4-4 tie by the end of the third period. After two overtime sessions, the score stood at a 5-5 stalemate giving the Drexel opponent, with four seconds of advantage time, the victory.

"We were disappointed about the loss to Drexel," head coach Steve Martin said, "but we get a rematch at the CAA Duals next Saturday, and we'll be looking forward to it."

Old Dominion is now 4-3 overall 0-1 in the CAA. The Monarchs are 2-8 all-time against the Dragons. They will have a chance at redemption next weekend as they meet Drexel again in the CAA Duals hosted by George Mason University.
