NORFOLK, Va. -- The Old Dominion men's soccer team (3-4-1) played over 104 minutes and took over 25 shots before deciding it was time to go home. The Monarchs dropped the University of Richmond (3-6-0) in a 1-0 double-overtime match on Saturday night with a steady barrage of offense. In the 105th minute T.J. Beaulieu knocked home his second career game winner off assists from A.J. Kulp and Yomby William. Junior keeper Evan Newton made three saves in the shutout victory as ODU finished out its nonconference schedule.

Right away in the first half the Monarchs controlled the game, outshooting the Spiders 14-2. The 14 first half shots included putting six of the first ten on net. The best opportunity came when in the 17th minute as sophomore Ambane Emmanuel fired a shot on-net and the Richmond keeper made a sensational diving save.

The two teams played to a scoreless tie in regulation as Emmanuel and junior Trevor Banks led the way offensively. Ambane took eight shots in the contest and Banks took five, three on-goal.

With the pace elevated in the overtime periods, ball control became an integral element of play. It was a nifty trap and pass from defender Yomby William that set up the game-winning goal. The pass was to senior captain A.J. Kulp who slipped the ball into space beyond the last line of defenders. T.J. Beaulieu found the loose ball and fired it past the keeper from just inside the 18-yard box.

The goal was Beaulieu's second of his career, as well as his second game-winner. He is now second on the team with four points. The assist was Kulp's ninth career helper.

Eric Sciocchetti was between the pipes for the Spiders the whole game and made 11 saves while allowing just the one goal. Newton was the netminder for the Monarchs and he notched his third shutout of the season.

For the game, the Monarchs outshot Richmond 29-8, including holding the Spiders to just one overtime shot.

The Monarchs will start CAA action next weekend as they host Northeastern Friday, October 5. Kick-off is scheduled for 7:00 pm.
