Aug. 23, 2003
NORFOLK, VA. - Casey McCluskey's goal with 5:03 left in the match lifted Duke University to a 3-2 come-from behind victory over Old Dominion Saturday night in an exhibition match. Becca McClain (Va. Beach, VA.) scored both of the Lady Monarch goals.
McClain put ODU up with less than four minutes remaining in the first half on an assist from Diane Baucom (Va. Beach, Va.). A minute into the second half ODU took a 2-0 lead as McClain scored again on an assist from Laura Beeman (Chalfont, PA.). Duke's rally started nine minutes later as Shelly Marshall took a pass from Sarah McCabe in front of the net to cut ODU's lead to 2-1. 20 minutes remaining Lauren Tippets scored to tie the match at two.
McLuskey had the ball on the right side about 20 yards out, cut to the middle of the field, drove toward the goal and pushed the game winner just past Kristen Bailey ( Hamilton, VA.).
Duke outshot ODU, 18-5. ODU goalies came up with eight saves on the evening. The Lady Monarchs return to action Friday when they open up the regular season at UNC Greensboro.
