OLYMPIC SAILING UPDATE: Team USA Defeats New Zealand, Bested by Russia

WEYMOUTH, UK - Former Old Dominion University sailing standouts Anna Tunnicliffe and Debbie Capozzi guided the United States to a split on Wednesday in the fourth day of the round robin format of the Women's Elliott 6m match race.

The United States, with Tunnicliffe at skipper paired with Capozzi and Molly O'Bryan Vandemoer at crew defeated New Zealand handidly in the first race of the day. The Americans won by splits of 0:14, 0:05, 0:17 and 0:15 for an easy win over New Zealand captain Stephanie Hazard and her crew Jenna Hansen and Susannah Pyatt.

In their second match of the day, the U.S. held an early lead of 0:03 on Russia at the first split but then dropped the following splits by 0:04, 0:10 and 0:04. Russian skipper Ekaterina Skudina along with crew Elena Siuzeva and Elena Oblova elevated the Russians into a tie for second while the U.S. bumped down to sole possesion of fourth.

On Thursday, the U.S. (5-3) faces just the Netherlands (3-5) at 9:40 a.m. (ET) before action breaks pauses on Friday. The United States resumes against Sweeden (0-8) at 10:05 a.m. (ET) and host Great Britain (4-4) at 11:10 a.m. (ET) as round robin action concludes at the Women's Elliott 6m match racing in Weymouth on Saturday.

The top eight teams from round robin action advance to the knockout stage where the crews race one another. The first crew to win three points, wins each series of races at that point to advance.
