.No. 55 Men's Tennis Wins Third Straight Defeating Winthrop 6-1

NORFOLK, Va. -- The No. 55 Old Dominion tennis may have lost the double point against Winthrop on Saturday, but the Monarchs rallied to win all six singles matches in its 6-1 victory over the Eagles.

No. 6 Harel Srugo (Kibutz Gazit, Israel) and Henrique Cancado (Belo Horizonte, Brazil) were the lone ODU doubles squad to garner a win against Winthrop. Trailing in the doubles point 1-0, the Monarch duo collected an 8-5 win at No. 1 doubles over Rodrigo Santos and Knorr. The deciding match went down to the wire with the Eagles emerging with the point with a No. 3 doubles win. Winthrop's Bastian Moldehnke and Thiago Barbosa edged out Rodrigo Souza (Rio de Janeiro, Brazil) and Yakov Diskin (Yorktown, Va.) by a close 9-8(6) margin.

Old Dominion then proceeded to take all six singles victories for their third straight win. Sophomore Alex Seleznev (Bishkek, Kyrgyz Republic)clinched with victory for the Monarchs with a straight set, 6-4, 6-1 win over the Eagles' Aleco Portugal at No. 3 singles.

Other wins for the Monarchs included straight set wins by senior Henrique Cancado, junior Eidy Igarashi (São José do Rio Preto, Brazil), junior Rodrigo Souza, and freshman Yakov Diskin. Cancado, ranked 18th in the country, earned the first Monarch point of the afternoon posting a 6-0, 6-1 victory at No. 2 singles against Winthrop's Rodrigo Santos. Igarashi, at No. 4 singles, defeated Arthur Takahaski, 6-2, 7-6 (5), Souza downed Jorge Pabilla, 6-1, 6-3, at No. 5 singles, while Diskin took home a 6-2, 6-4 victory over Thaigo Barbosa at the No. 6 spot.

No. 7 Harel Srugo also captured a victory with a come from behind, 4-6, 6-3, 6-2 win over Bastian Moldehnke at No. 1 singles.

The Old Dominion men's tennis team returns to action on Wednesday, February 21st when they travel to No. 35 N.C. State.
