Monarchs Head to Irwin Carolina Open Saturday

NORFOLK, VA -The Old Dominion wrestling team is set to compete in the Irwin Carolina Open Saturday, at North Carolina's Carmichael Auditorium in Chapel Hill, NC.  Competition begins at 10:00 A.M. and will run throughout the day.  Redshirt sophomore Christian Staylor (Chesapeake, VA/Great Bridge/125 lbs), ranked #10 nationally in the 125 weight class, and junior Adam Wright (Dayton, VA/184 lbs), ranked #16 nationally in the 184 weight class, will lead the Monarch charge.


ODU will be competing against a very talented field, which includes ACC schools Duke, NC State, Virginia Tech and hosts North Carolina, as well as the Big 10's Michigan State.  Michigan State received votes in the latest coaches' poll and boasts two top five wrestlers:  Nick Simmons is ranked #3 in the 125 weight class, while Andy Simmons is #4 at 141.  Also ranked is Junior Evan Sola from North Carolina, who is #11 at 133 and David Hoffman from Virginia Tech, who is #14 at 133.


Christian Staylor moved up to #10 in the latest Intermat rankings in the 125 weight class and is ranked #14 by W.I.N. Magazine.  Junior Adam Wright (Dayton, VA/184) is ranked #16 by Amateur Wrestling News and #18 by W.I.N. Magazine.
