Cancado, Igarashi Advance In Qualifying Bracket At Polo Ralph Lauren All-American Championships
Oct. 2, 2006
TULSA, Okla. -- Both senior Henrique Cancado (Belo Horizonte, Brazil) and No. 78 junior Eidy Igarashi (São José do Rio Preto, Brazil) won their first round matches in the qualifying bracket at the 2006 Polo Ralph Lauren All-American Championships. Both Monarchs need two more wins to advance to the tournament main draw.
Cancado reached the second round with his third victory over ranked opponent this season. He downed No. 95 Bobby Cameron of Tennessee in straight sets, 6-3, 6-3. Tomorrow Cancado will face the winners of the first round match-up between San Diego State's No. 99 Markus Dickhardt and Duke's Joey Atas. Cancado previously faced Atas in the opening round of 16 at the University of Virginia Invite in mid-September. Cancado emerged with a 6-4, 6-1 win.
Igarashi advanced with a straight set, 6-2, 6-3 win over fellow CAA rival Anze Cevka of Georgia State. He will face either Rook Schellenberg of Texas or Michael Look of UCLA in the second round.
The Polo Ralph Lauren All-American Tennis Championships include five days of qualifying events that precede the October 5-8 main draw. A 128-player prequalifying tournament takes place Sept. 30-Oct. 1. This feeds into 128-player and 64-doubles team qualifying tournaments Oct. 2-5, which then feeds into the 64-player, 32-doubles team main draws.
The Polo Ralph Lauren All-American Tennis Championships offer the first national singles and doubles titles of the 2006-07 collegiate tennis season, and are followed by the ITA National Intercollegiate Indoor Championships in November and the third event is the season-ending NCAA Championships in May.
